Mint Juleps and Big Hats…. Yes, it’s that time of year again. The Kentucky Derby is May 3rd, and there will be a record number of Mint Juleps being made and served around the country. The Mint Julep is as synonymous to the annual race held at Churchill Downs as Margaritas are with Cinco De Mayo If you’ve never had one, it’s one of those drinks you have to experience at least once, and preferably when it’s “trendy” like right now so you can get your feet wet with a crowd of others.

Boasting something as huge as “The Perfect Mint Julep Recipe” or “The Best Mint Julep” is kind of bold, and we were being a bit funny in saying so because there’s a lot of big claims floating around the bar scene. But to be honest we don’t know if it’s the best, because everyone’s taste is different. What we do have is the perfect mint julep recipe for us. It’s not some long complicated recipe that takes a ton of time to make like you could find if you go searching online… This one’s simple and delicious, and we’re using Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon in ours. Some prefer Evan Williams, some will swear by Makers Mark (one of our favorites), and atleast 4-5 other huge brands could come into play here, but we fell in love with Four Roses last summer at Tales of the Cocktail, and so here we are…

  • 2-3 oz Four Roses Small Batch BourbonĀ®
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 12 Mint leaves
  • Club Soda
  • Garnish: Mint sprigs and Orange Slice

Gently crush mint leaves in a cool tall glass. (Lightly muddle the mint and sugar with a splash of soda water in a mixing glass.) Fill the glass with cracked ice. Add Four Roses, club soda and stir well. Garnish with a slice of orange and a few sprigs of mint, and serve.

Don’t Forget your Big Hate

Cheers!
