National Bootleggers Day

January 17th, 1920 ring a bell? It’s the day a bunch of crazy people decided that making and selling booze should be illegal, and thankfully by 1933 they came to their senses and repealed it. But just because they made it illegal doesn’t mean people gave up the booze. Smart business men from a small town in Iowa chose to become outlaws, producing top shelf whiskey known as Templeton Rye aka #Thegoodstuff. Over time Templeton became the whiskey of choice for notorious gangster Al Capone and became a big part of his bootlegging empire. AlCaponemugshotCPD

To date, Templeton Rye is still based on its original prohibition era recipe. It’s made legally now in Templeton Iowa where it’s aged in charred new oak barrels for 4 years.  So today we recognize January 17th  as National Bootleggers Day not only as the birthday of Templeton Rye but also the birthday of Al Capone himself. If those aren’t two great reasons to drink I don’t know what else you need! To help you celebrate we’ve teamed up with Templeton to bring you a our own prohibition cocktail suggestions to try this weekend. Cheers!

  • 3/4 oz Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice
  • 3/4 oz Grenadine (Make your own Grenadine here, WAY better than the store bought stuff)
  • Apple Slice for garnish

Fill an empty rocks glass to the top with crushed ice. Combine whiskey and juices together in a shaker filled with ice and pour into your rocks glass. Top with grenadine and garnish with an apple slice.
