December 21st is National Coquito Day and we would be crazy to let the day pass us by without sharing 3 of our favorite recipes so that everyone can enjoy some this holiday season.
What is Coquito?
Coquito meaning “Little Coconut” in Spanish is a traditional Christmas drink that originated in Puerto Rico. The coconut-based alcoholic beverage is similar to eggnog, which is why it’s often referred to as Puerto Rican Eggnog. For those that make it, almost no recipe is exactly the same but they all share the basic base of coconut milk, coconut cream, and evaporated milk. Most call for rum, specifically Puerto Rican rum, but I’ve even seen some use vodka. Some people use eggs (yuck) and some don’t, but it can get pretty creative. Below we’ll share our classic recipe along with our recipe that we like to substitute sometimes. So once you try making it on your own, get creative, and have fun with making it your own.
Classic Coquito
- 1 Can sweetened condensed milk
- 1 Can evaporated milk
- 1 Can Coconut Milk
- 1 Cup Cream of Coconut
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- ½ tsp of cinnamon
- 1 Cup white rum
Dulce De Leche Cream (Caramel Coquito)
- 1 Can Dulce de Leche Cream
- 1 Can Evaporated milk
- 1 Can Coconut Milk
- 1 Cup Cream of Coconut
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- ½ tsp of cinnamon
- 1 Cup white rum
Pistachio Coquito
- 1 Can Sweetened Condensed Milk
- 1 Can Evaporated milk
- 1 Can Coconut Milk
- 1 Cup Cream of Coconut
- 1 1/2 Cup Pistachio Paste
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- ½ tsp of cinnamon
- 1 1/2 Cup white rum
- 5 Drops green food coloring (optional)
Directions: Combine all ingredients one by one into a blender and blend for 30 seconds to a minute. I recommend starting with your more liquid ingredients (milks) and then add in the thicker creams. After mixed together well, pour into a rocks glass and garnish with cinnamon and/or a cinnamon stick.
