A Banana Milk Coffee You NEED to TRY

This one’s for the coffee lovers. With Summer almost over, you’ll probably start to see the pumpkin invasion return to your favorite coffee shops. But before we make the switch, we’re still going bananas about a drink we tried this Summer called banana milk coffee. If you’ve never had it before, it’s somewhere between a banana milkshake and an iced coffee and it’s delicious. It’s a blend of milk, bananas, cold brew coffee, and simple syrup and it’s probably one of the best things I’ve ever had. After daydreaming (and drooling) about the last one I had, I felt inspired to whip up a boozy version that was fitting for Intoxicology.

A couple of weeks back, one of our readers emailed me and asked if I had any cocktail recipes that included both rum and tequila. When I started to think, I realized it’s not a lot outside of the Long Island Iced Tea and so that’s where the basis of this drink was born. Like the original, I started with milk, organic and whole. For the banana flavor, I went about it in two ways. I made this cocktail both as a frozen and non-frozen beverage. In the non-frozen, I simply added banana liqueur while choosing to add both fresh bananas and the liqueur in our frozen version. For the cold brew, we substitute Patron XO which is a delicious blend of premium tequila and coffee. Finally, my secret ingredient is RumChata, the Caribbean cream liqueur that works in just about anything you can think of.

Boozy Banana Coffee Milk (Regular)

Combine all ingredients in a chilled cup and stir.

Boozy Banana Coffee Milk (Frozen)

  • 4 oz Organic whole milk
  • 2 oz RumChata
  • 1 oz Patron XO
  • 1 oz Banana Liqueur
  • 1 Banana
  • Ice

Slice your banana and combine with all other ingredients and ice in a blender. Blend until desired consistency and pour into a chilled glass.

Cheers,

Intoxicology

I don’t think you need me to tell you it’s hot outside right? It’s not even Summer yet and already my A/C is cranked up. I guess that’s what I get for moving to Florida? Luckily we’ve become quite clever and finding “unique” ways of staying cool down here and we’re sharing one of those tricks with you now. Frozen booze! Ok, so it’s not a trick so much as it is just being an alcoholic. Remember how much you loved slushies growing up? This hard cider slushy made with Angry Orchard Crisp Apple is the perfect “grown up” version and it’ll definitely keep you cool on those hot Summer days. If you’ve never had Angry orchard, it’s a hard cider with bright, crisp apple flavor that comes from the Sam Adam’s brand family. Our favorite is the elderflower flavor, but there are so many choose from we suggest you try them all. So check out the recipe below and whip up a couple this weekend!

Hard Cider Slushy

Angry Hard Cider Slushy

  • 5 oz Angry Orchard Crisp Apple
  • 1 oz White Rum
  • 0.75 oz Lime Juice
  • 2.5 tbsp White Sugar
  • 4 Strawberries (Can also sub any other seasonal berries that are available)
  • 2 cups Ice

Method: Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth. Serve in rocks glass and garnish with strawberry.

  Adult Milkshakes

Milkshakes are an all time American classic. Whether you enjoy them at your favorite ice cream shop, or you prefer to make them at home, you can’t go wrong with one of these frozen sweets on a hot Summer day. Remember when you were a kid how happy you got when your parents bought or made you a milkshake? It was the highlight of your week! We’d be lying if we said we don’t get a little jealous now as parents watching the joy on our kids faces. Seriously though, why should the kids get to have all the fun?!? We’re all grown up now, so why can’t our milkshakes grow up too?!? We’re talking adult milkshakes!

Adult milkshakes are exactly what they sound like, frozen milkshakes with alcohol added. One of our first experiences with adult milkshakes was our first trip to Tales of the Cocktail in New Orleans. In Nola they pretty much spike EVERYTHING, so we had one in the middle of the day (day drinking!) and have been hooked ever since. You’ll find them on the menu at a few restaurants in some cities, but if you don’t want to leave your house or you’re “frugal” (see: cheapo) like me, you can make them at home!

They’re super easy to make, all you need is a blender and your ingredients. You can go as simple as vanilla ice cream with some booze, or go crazy with exotic flavors, toppings, and syrups, aka the works. One thing to keep in mind is you don’t have to go all out with liquor. If it’s too strong you might get turned off, we prefer to use liqueurs instead, they’ll give it some buzz, some flavoring, and blend right into the sweet creaminess of the ice cream. Generally we go for 2:1 ratio of ice cream to booze (2 scoops, 1 oz) but you can play around with it yourself, don’t be afraid to let the creativity flow!

With the heat index over 100 degrees for a few days in a row now (Thanks Florida!), now seems like the perfect time to whip some of these up to cool us off. If you remember, a couple of months back we partnered with RumChata to share an awesome spiked iced coffee recipe, and I thought RumChata would make the perfect mix-in for these boozy adult milkshakes. Check out a few recipes we recommend below:

Reasons to Visit Florida: A Guide to Florida Craft Distilleries

With Memorial Day passed us, it marks the unofficial start of summer vacation season for many around the country. Florida is one of the most visited travel destinations years round, with record numbers for 2016, and it’s expected to continue this year with a big boost in tourism this time of year especially. We speak from experience too, as both Lori and myself are transplants that made the leap in the 2000’s. Her family visited Disney one summer and fell in love, and made the move from Boston to Orlando. For me, I ditched the cold winters of Chicago and came to Florida for college. What I thought would be just a 4-year stay has turned into 14 years and counting with stops in Tallahassee, Jacksonville, and Orlando. Whether you come here for the beaches, Disney, the food, school, or the diverse cultures, there’s a LOT of good reasons to visit Florida, and this month we decided to partner with VisitFlorida.com to share on of our favorite reasons to come here: Florida Craft distilleries!

When you think of drinking in Florida you probably think of the beaches, and bright frozen drinks with little umbrellas in them, and that’s fun and all, but we’ve really stepped it up a notch with quality craft cocktails using fantastic locally sourced spirits. From “Jax” up in North Florida down to Miami and the Keys in South Florida, there are some great spirits being produced and distillery tours are a great way to drink, have fun, and get educated at the same time. We’re not saying you should plan your travel destinations based on drinking options… well, maybe we are. And if you did, this drinking guide might help make your trip a little bit easier.

Tour hours are Friday’s and Saturdays at 3pm and 5pm and reservations are encouraged but not required.

St. Augustine

St. Augustine Distillery Company

112 Riberia St, Saint Augustine, Florida 32084

Florida Craft Distilleries

We just had the pleasure of visiting this distillery three weeks back and we had a blast. The city itself has tons of culture, but the distillery put it over the top for us. St. Augustine Distillery is locally founded and community owned and is located in one of Florida’s oldest building, a former ice plant that is over 100 years old. Spirits made here include vodka distilled with Florida sugar cane, both a traditional & barrel-aged gin, a pot distilled rum made from select regional sugarcane, and an amazing port finished bourbon that sells out FAST. Tours are free and are offered Monday to Sunday from 10:30 am to 5pm. Each tour includes a guide of their facility, education on their production process, a free sampling of each spirit they make crafted in front of you by the on-site mixology team, and ends in their gift shop with the option to purchase spirits and souvenirs. No reservations are needed. For added fun stop in the Ice Plant bar located directly above the distillery.

Orlando

Winter Park Distilling Company

1288 North Orange Avenue, Winter Park, Florida 32789

Florida Craft Distilleries

Winter Park Distilling Company is one of our favorite Florida craft distilleries, so it has a special place in our heart. It’s the local distillery here only 20 minutes from where I live, and it’s a brand we’ve worked with in the past reviewing their products during the early stages of their launch. It’s Orange County Florida’s first craft distillery and has been in production since 2010. The distillery offers tours of its facility throughout the week on the basis of advance requests and availability, and it comes at a cost of $11 per adult. Tours last approximately 35-40 minutes and features the following spirits: Genius Vodka, Dog Island Rum, Dog Island Beer barrel aged rum, Bear Gully white whiskey, Bear Gully Reserve single-barrel bourbon, and Bear Gully Classic bonfire bourbon. The newly opened Bear & Peacock Brewery taproom adjoins the Winter Park Distilling Company and serves their spirits as well as craft beer produced on site.

St Petersburg/Tampa

St. Petersburg Distillery

800 31st St. S, St. Petersburg, FL 33712

Florida Craft Distilleries

As if there wasn’t enough to do in the increasingly popular Tampa/St. Pete area, the distillery put them over the top. Tampa is home to our favorite out-of-town restaurant & bar, and another must visit, Datz Deli. St. Petersburg Distillery opened in 2014, and is home to Banyan Reserve vodka, voted best artisan vodka in 2016 by Southern Living Magazine. Other brands you can find here include Old St. Pete rum & spice, gin, whiskey, and the classic vodka as well. Additionally they house Oak & Palm spiced rum and coconut rums, Tippler’s orange liqueur, and Royal Mead honey wine. We haven’t had the chance to visit them yet, and there isn’t much information about tours available on their website, but they do have an events calendar where you’ll find them hosting events at various bars, restaurants, and social events throughout the city.

Cape Coral

Wicked Dolphin Rum

131 SW 3rd Place, Cape Coral, FL 33991

Florida Craft Distilleries

Wicked Dolphin got its start in 2012 and is located in one of our favorite hidden gem cities, Cape Coral, Florida. It’s on the west side and less crowded traditionally than other tourist cities. Located on 35 minutes from Florida’s fertile sugarcane fields, here they make true Florida rum in small batches using local ingredients, aged in American white oak barrels originally used for Kentucky bourbon for 3 to 14 years. Tours at Wicked Dolphin are free and will take you through the steps of how they source, distill and barrel their rums. Also you’ll get a peek at how they come up with different flavors and afterwards can sample existing rums as well as some new ones they’re working on. Be prepared if you’re visiting in the summer it can get quite hot inside the distillery but don’t worry the tasting room is fully air-conditioned. Flavors available include Crystal, Gold, Coconut, and Black rums as well as Reserve flavors such as Spiced, Silver, and Gold.
