MalibuSundae1Memorial day just passed, and that’s the unofficial kickoff to Summer for most of us. And with the changing of the seasons comes the changing of the drinking habits. Summer brings out the rum, and flavorful vodkas, so it’s not wonder we’re seeing a lot of new product launches of late. With news of the new Ciroc Amaretto hitting shelves soon, the summer launching spree has already begun. Not to be left out, the king spirit of the summer, rum, is making waves too. Malibu Caribbean Rum has launched a slew of new flavors over the years trying to make sure they don’t get left behind with all the “innovative” vodka flavors fighting for space on the shelf and has done so both successfully and unsuccessfully. One of the firsts was Malibu Lime which didn’t last too long and was shortly after discontinued. Since then, we’ve seen Malibu Pineapple, Mango, Passion fruit, and Banana come and take off. More recently, Malibu has taken a bit more riskier approach with some not so common flavor attempts such as Malibu Red (Coconut rum with Tequila flavor), Malibu Black (Higher proof, and less sweetness), and Malibu Sunshine (Lemon and lime infused flavor). From what I’ve tried, read, and heard, the word is still out on Sunshine, Black is a hit, and Red was a dud that sounded cool in theory but just hasn’t caught on. But you can’t blame them for trying. When your competition is sputtering out flavor after flavor, you dont’ want to take the chance of becoming the old bottle on the shelf. Funny thing is, sometimes what isn’t broke doesn’t need fixing. Malibu Coconut Rum has long been a party drink of choice; smooth rum, sweet coconut flavor, and not too heavy on the alcohol so you get just enough buzz to keep the party going.

That being said, the creative team behind Malibu has just launched their latest additions to the brand family, Malibu Sundae and Malibu Swirl. Malibu Sundae and Malibu Swirl are the brands first attempt at attacking the confectionery spirits segment which has EXPLODED in the past two years with flavors like cake, cupcake, caramel, s’mores, and several others. Malibu Sundae combines the brand’s signature coconut taste with the tempting flavor of chocolate ice cream while Malibu Swirl pairs the flavor of coconut with the enticing taste of strawberries and cream.

“We are excited to be entering the growing confectionery segment,” said Lisa McCann, Brand Director for Malibu, Pernod Ricard USA, “It is where we expect to see significant growth going forward. Malibu Sundae and Malibu Swirl are set to capitalize on this growth and deliver two entirely new ways to experience the brand.”

Malibu Sundae, and Malibu Swirl will be available in your typical sized, 1L, 750ml, and the picket sized and will be available at the usual 12.99-16.99 range depending on your area. I have to admit, as tired as the “flavor game” gets, I’m always interested in trying them. Probably cause I’m a lush, but that’s another post for another day. Anyway, be on the lookout for a bottle on the shelf soon and let us know what you think. We’ll be have reviewing Swirl and Sundae shortly with a few recipes for you to try at home.

Cheers,

Next time you go hunting for something new to try at your local pub or package store, you might notice a crazy new bottle in the beer and cider section, most likely near the crafts. Boston Beer Co. quietly launched Angry Orchard, their new cider addition about 6 months ago and is planning to go national as early as this month. Their lineup includes the common favorites like “crisp apple” and “traditional dry” , but also includes a cool new infusion and my personal favorite, apple-ginger which to me tastes like a apple flavored ginger ale. What seperates Angry Orchard from the competition? Well for one, they make their cider with apples plucked from France and Italy, giving them a distinct and better taste then some of the ciders you may be use to drinking.

“We searched the world to find the right orchards, with the right attitude and the best combination of apple types. Our search for particular flavors led us to the traditional growing regions of Europe, where we hand-select bittersweet apples from France and culinary apples from Italy. These areas were ideal because of their soil composition and climate. The wide range of apples used in Angry Orchard cider contributes to the complex flavor profile of each of our cider styles.”

If that doesn’t suck you in, maybe their eye-catching packaging will. One of my favorite things though about Angry Orchard is its awesome website complete with great graphics, interactive links and most importantly, a portion of the site dedicated to mixology.  I love their acknowledgement of the growing popularity of beer/cider cocktails. Check out below to see a few of their cocktail suggestions for yourself.

…..It’s that time of year again. That’s right Halloween is just around the corner and for many of us, it’s an excuse to look and act insane without the usual stares. Then there are those like myself that see it as just another reason to get creative with my drinking habit. Is it any wonder that Halloween is the nations 3rd largest drinking holiday? In honor of “All-Hallows-Even” I felt it only necessary to review the worlds first and ONLY “Black Vodka”.

Sexy, sleek, sophisticated, stylish. Dark, secretive, exclusive. These are all words that are often associated with the color black so it’s no wonder that in the age of invention that someone was smart enough to add color to the #1 selling spirit in the world. Blavod vodka is the worlds first and only black vodka and comes to us from the United Kingdom. You won’t find any American produced black vodkas because government regulations in the U.S. say domestic distillers can’t call a spirit vodka unless it is “without distinctive character, aroma, taste or color.” Lucky for us the “Brits” use less strict regulations. Over the past few years, several colored vodkas have crept into the market such as Three Olives Purple, Ciroc Coconut, and the UV flavored vodka series, but unlike those brands, Blavod offers a non flavored black hue without taking away from it’s authentic and natural taste of premium vodka. Right about now you’re probably asking yourself, what do they use to give Blavod it’s unique color without affecting it’s taste. Blavod’s hue derives from Black Catechu which are extracts from the heartwood of Burmese catechu acacia trees which give it its black color without interfering with the vodkas natural, taste or smell.

Tasting Notes: It’s natural black color tends to try and influence you into smelling and tasting things that are not there. Spooky right?  This one starts out smooth but hits you with a bit of a spicy finish. It’s comparable to several medium grade vodkas on the market such as Smirnoff or Russian Standard.

Final Thoughts: As far as vodka goes Blavod is a satisfactory compliment to any cocktail but more importantly can easily survive without the “Black Vodka” gimmick on taste alone. It’s unique color only adds a wow factor for those of us looking for something different the next time we’re at the counter at our favorite convenience store. The ability to make cool looking cocktails alone is worth the $17.99. One of Blavod’s best features is it’s ability to create wonderful layers. That combined with it’s color make it obvious first choices for excellent Halloween themed cocktails such as the “Black Widow” and Ghosts in the Graveyard” which you can find along with several other recipes below.
