Damoiseau Virgin Cane Rum is an agricole rum from the French West Indies (Guadeloupe), and is made from the distillation of sugar cane juice and aged 3-6 months in oak barrels. The name might not be familiar, but they aren’t new to the game. Damoiseau has actually been producing quality rhums since 1942. No, that’s not a typo. At the top of the bottle you’ll see the word rhum, and may have even seen it on several other brands when shopping and thought it was another countries way of spelling it, but there is actually a difference. Generally, Rum is made with molasses, while Rhums are made from pressed sugar cane juice. The taste is noticeably different. They tend to border closely in flavor to a Cachaca (Brazilian rum). Our experience with rhums are actually a bit limited, so we were glad to get our hands on a bottle of Damoiseau to see how it stacks up.
Looks Like: This one won’t catch your eye as you’re walking down the rum aisle. It’s in a pretty typical shaped bottle, frosted, and with nothing much on the bottle besides the brands classically French logo. Keep in mind, some of the WORST tasting spirits out there have the flashiest bottles. Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.
Smells Like: Tropical fruit and fresh herbs, grass.
Tastes Like: If you’re a fan of cachaca, you’ll like this one. It’s got good flavors, and a bit of spiciness. The fact that it’s made from sugar cane juice gives it a more natural flavor in the rum (grassy), which in my opinion, makes it a great pairing with citrus juices. We used this to make a Ti Punch, and an awesome Daiquiri. It’s smooth from start to finish, and will definitely be used throughout the next few weeks for some spring cocktails experimentation.
