If you’re in the Orlando area and looking for a great time this weekend then the 11th Annual Rum fest Orlando might be the perfect event. Saturday June 27th there will be 20 different types offering unlimited samples for 3 hours in the heart of downtown Orlando at Wall St. Plaza. . Combine that with a crazy reggae festival featuring several bands and you’ve got one hell of a night.

This year Rum booths include: Bacardi, Kraken, Margaritaville, Captain Morgan and Sailor Jerry to name a few…as well as a bunch of new, exciting and rare rums too. In addition there will be a VIP Terrace for an additional cost with even more rums, even more cocktails, and Caribbean inspired snacks courtesy of Red Stripe Lager. Its pretty hot in Florida so getting away for a bit or an air-conditioned terrace while still sampling rums might be a good idea.

If you’re interested you can purchase tickets through Eventbrite using the  THIS LINK.

NEW BOOZE

We get a lot of booze in the mail. We get even more emails and press releases for new brands hitting the shelf sent to our email. I’m a pretty organized person but even I fall behind sometimes and things get forgotten. The Brand reps and PR teams that reach out to us are literally some of the coolest and down to earth people I’ve had the chance to network with so it actually does bother me when I realize weeks later I completely missed their email. This is my attempt to solve that. We can’t review every bottle that comes our way (although we have fun trying), and we don’t have the time to share every press release either. That doesn’t mean our readers don’t deserve to know about it, so every week, or at least on an “as needed” basis we’re going to share a new series I like to call “New Booze”. If it’s new to market, and hitting a shelf somewhere and we know about it, so will you. Brands read this part especially. If you have a new product that’s coming out relatively soon, feel free to email us and we’ll do our best to get it in the next edition of New Booze.  With that being said, here are some new brands we recently found that either launched recently or will be soon.

We’re in the final stretch of Summer with August finally here, so getting the last of those Summer cookouts and backyard parties out-of-the-way before you’re covered in 10 inches of snow might be a good idea. One of my favorite flavors to incorporate this time of year is watermelon, and I thought it was a perfect way to segue into National Watermelon Day coming August 3rd. Much like pineapple, it’s a pretty versatile fruit. Slice it and eat it fresh, throw some on the grill, or juice it. One of my favorite things to do though is add some booze to it and have fun. We’ve Spiked watermelons before, we’ve made adult popsicles that were a HUGE hit, and now I wanted to share some tasty cocktails using watermelon we tried this past week. One comes courtesy of Hard Rock Cafe and is available to order nation wide at any of their locations, or if you want to stay in and make something at home we’ve included that recipe AND we’ve got a delicious cocktail from Sauza Tequila we tried and liked. Try them both and let us know what you ended up drinking (if you can remember).

Cheers!

Watermelon Wave Press Via Hard Rock Cafe
Watermelon Wave Press Via Hard Rock Cafe

Watermelon Wave Press ( Courtesy of Hard Rock Cafe )

  • 3 Lemon Wedges
  • 2 – 3 Strawberries (depending on size), hulled & quartered
  • 1 oz Watermelon Puree

To make Watermelon Puree – remove the seeds from watermelon and cut into chucks then place into a blender and blend until smooth.  You may need to add sugar if the watermelon is not sweet)

  • 1 oz Cointreau
  • 2 oz Bacardi Dragonberry Rum
  • 7 oz Lemonade (pick your favorite brand)
  • 7 oz Lemon-Lime Soda

Hard Rock uses a French Coffee press to make this drink, but for making at home you can use a 20 oz glass pitcher or other container. Add fruit and puree to the pitcher, and lightly muddle fruit in bottom to release the juices before adding liquid ingredients. Add all remaining ingredients and stir.  Fill serving glasses with ice, and pour. The recipe can be made several hours in advance to allow the fruit to better incorporate into the mix.

Sangria

Hope everyone is enjoying their Holiday weekend. Whether you’ve got a 4 day, 3 day, or just Memorial day off, make sure to take some time to enjoy yourself with friends and family. Like most holidays, a lot of alcohol will be consumed this weekend and you might be trying to figure out what to drink. Are you attending a party or hosting a party? We’re headed out with friends, so we’ll probably bring something with us, but when we host, we tend to make drinks in bulk, it’s less time consuming, and generally everyone is happy to just go to the punch bowl, grab a cup and keep it moving. Sangria, Punch, and Margaritas tend to be the biggest hits for pre batched cocktails, so we’re sharing a sangria recipe we tried and loved today. We received this recipe from Don Julio Tequila, and it’s delicious, so try it out, and let us know what you think.

Cheers
