Sangria

Hope everyone is enjoying their Holiday weekend. Whether you’ve got a 4 day, 3 day, or just Memorial day off, make sure to take some time to enjoy yourself with friends and family. Like most holidays, a lot of alcohol will be consumed this weekend and you might be trying to figure out what to drink. Are you attending a party or hosting a party? We’re headed out with friends, so we’ll probably bring something with us, but when we host, we tend to make drinks in bulk, it’s less time consuming, and generally everyone is happy to just go to the punch bowl, grab a cup and keep it moving. Sangria, Punch, and Margaritas tend to be the biggest hits for pre batched cocktails, so we’re sharing a sangria recipe we tried and loved today. We received this recipe from Don Julio Tequila, and it’s delicious, so try it out, and let us know what you think.

Cheers

Casa Noble Paloma

Cinco De Mayo is almost here, Memorial day is right around the corner, and before you know it it will be 4th of July. Those are 3 of the biggest drinking holidays of the year. But Earth Day is April 22nd, and you know I’m always looking for a reason to raise a glass. But what are you suppose to drink for a holiday that is a celebration of Mother Nature? How about Organic Tequila? Truth be told, with warmer months ahead, I wanted to find a way to feature a great summer cocktail while helping to celebrate Earth Day, and I immediately thought of an organic Paloma recipe I saw. Palomas are amazing, and have long since replaced margaritas as my favorite tequila drink. Hopefully after trying this one, you’ll consider the switch too. To make it, we’re using Casa Noble tequila, a organic tequila that’s pretty smooth with a great finish.

Casa Noble Paloma

  • 2 oz Casa Noble Crystal (Blanco)
  • 1/2 oz Lime Juice
  • 4 oz Grapefruit Juice
  • Splash of Soda Water

Pour the first 3 ingredients in a glass and stir, and add a splash of soda water on top.

Cheers

Sour Mix (also known as Sweet and Sour mix) is one of the most important ingredients that any bartender or home mixologist can have in his arsenal. It’s used in many classic favorites ( Margarita, Collin, Whiskey sour) and it’s very easy to incorporate in new recipes as you’re mixing at home. If you head to your local liquor store (or grocery store) chances are you’ll find at least a dozen different pre packaged brands of sour mix under several names ( Margarita mix, Collins mix, lemon-lime mix) and in all different shapes and sizes ( 1.75 L jug, 16oz bottle, plastic bag, etc). If you’ve ever bought and used any of these before, you might have realized they all taste slightly different but none taste like the real thing

Real Sour Mix is made up of lemon juice, lime juice, sugar and water. Those pre packaged brands tend to taste more  like an overly sweet, artificially flavored candy than the fresh and citrus-y mixer its intended to be. If your bar is already stocked with one of those pre-made brands, I challenge you to try making some fresh sweet and sour using our how-to guide today and see for yourself the difference. Why should you try do-it-yourself? Think about it, mixing drinks isn’t much different then baking or cooking. The fresher the ingredients, the better the final result. It shouldn’t taste like a lemon lime jolly rancher. It shouldn’t look like radioactive waste (bright green, bright yellow, or green-yellow).

Making your own Sour mix isn’t rocket science. All it requires is the juicing of a few lemons and limes and adding some water and sugar. Chances are you have most of this on hand in your pantry anyway. Even better, you can make a batch in bulk and keep it stocked in the fridge for impromptu margaritas and whiskey sours when the neighbors come over. Try this at home and let us know what you think. You can thank us later.

Home Made Sour Mix (Sweet & Sour)

  • 3 cups Sugar
  • 3 cups Water
  • 2 cups Fresh Lime Juice
  • 2 cups Fresh Lemon Juice

Combine your water and sugar in large pan. Bring the pan to a boil, for about 7 minutes. Stir until sugar dissolves. Remove from the heat and let it cool. Separately, juice your lemons and limes into a container removing the pulp (unless you enjoy pulp) and then add to your cooled down syrup. Chill in the fridge.

Cheers!

This weekend we come together for one big tribute to mom and there’s no better way to let mom know you love her than by giving her a bunch of booze and spending some quality time with her. We’ve managed to turn every other holiday into a drinking extravaganza, so why should we leave mom out of the fun? After all, she did birth us right? Just in time, we received a few awesome cocktail recipes courtesy of SkinnyGirl Cocktails and wanted to share them with our fans. If you make mommy a drink she’ll love you, if you make her a drink that still helps her keep her figure she’ll love you FOREVER. For those of you a bit unfamiliar with the Skinny Girl Brand, they’re the low calorie cocktail kingpins that started out from an idea for a healthier margarita from author, chef, and reality TV star Bethenny Frankel. Ironically enough, one of the first articles we wrote here at 101 was on the Skinny Girl, before they exploded into the brand featuring 16 different “skinny drinks” that they are now.  To be honest, our philosophy has always been to make things fresh and from scratch, and with Mrs. Frankel being a chef herself, I’m sure she would agree. But not everyone can get as artisitic in the kitchen (or bar) as some of us, nor find all the right ingredients. Sometimes it’s just a matter of time and convenience. For those situations, read-to-drink or “pre made” cocktails are always an option. But be weary, the pre made stuff usually is LOADED with calories, even more so than the fancy colorful drinks you order at the bar. So knowing that you can take a short cut in your boozing and not worry about tipping the scales the next morning makes Skinny Girl a Plus. So if you haven’t already made plans, pick up a bottle or two of Skinny Girl and try one of these cocktail suggestions with mom this weekend.
