pavan sangriaOk, before I get all the strange looks let me explain. The Superbowl is around the corner and I get it, that’s ultimate man’s day. Beer, cocktails, wings, burgers, all sorts of cooked animal flesh being tossed around, and then someone shows up with Sangria. Not cool right? Hear me out though. Have you actually looked around at the  Superbowl parties you attend every year? It isn’t just Joe Football fan anymore, it’s their mom, dad, wife, wife’s friends, kids, neighbors etc. and they aren’t all die-hard football lovers, some only love their team and some don’t even watch other than the big games. But for Superbowl Sunday it’s not about whether you like football or not, it’s about joining in on the country’s largest (in my opinion) non holiday celebration. I’ve had people over that don’t drink, I’ve been to parties where there are vegans floating around, so if that can happen, someone can bring over Sangria and we’ve got a great one we tasted this past Summer and wanted to share. It’s not your momma’s sangria. It’s got wine in it but then we kick it up a notch using a funky liqueur we sampled at Tales Of The Cocktail last year and it’s AMAZING. It’s also super easy so check it out, see if it’s available in your area and let us know what you think.

  • 1 Parts Pavan Liqueur de France
  • 2 Parts Red OR 1 Part White OR 1 1/2 Parts Rose Wine (Your preference)
  • Seasonal fresh fruits

Pour all ingredients into a pitcher or punch bowl. Garnish with fresh fruits. Pour over ice and top off with sparkling water.

Peaches & Scream

With Halloween coming up, I’m proud to say that this year we’ve received more emails from fans than ever looking for drink ideas. If you’re throwing a party and want a signature drink to make your friends remember YOUR party, I think I’ve got just the one. If you remember, this past summer we reviewed Bushel & Barrel’s apple whiskey. It’s definitely one of our top new liquors of 2014. We made an awesome apple Punch recipe with it but I REALLY was waiting for this time of year so I could make some fall cocktails with it. Here’s our first, and it’s DELICIOUS.

Berentzen’s Peaches & Scream Cocktail
  • 2 oz. Berentzen Bushel & Barrel
  • ½ oz. cream
  • ½ oz. peach puree
  • Pinch of cinnamon spice
  • Brown sugar or colored sugar crystals for rim of glass
Combine Berentzen Bushel & Barrel, cream, and peach puree into ice-filled shaker.  Shake well and strain into a martini glass.  Garnish with dash of cinnamon spice and peach slice.
Cheers.

The Hammond Did you know August 16th was National Rum Day? In my never ending search to find an excuse to drink, National Rum day coinciding with the end of Summer and Back to school is perfect. Whether you’re extremely happy or extremely sad your kids are headed back to the classroom, rum can help you through it. And if you’re like me looking to get one last trip or vacation out of the way before school starts, even better excuse to have a drink.

This cocktail comes from Theo Lieberman, head bartender at the famed Milk & Honey in New York. This isn’t your typical rum drink so if you’re expecting a rum & coke or a tiki drink then think again. It’s a strong a sophisticated cocktail, similar to a Manhattan that uses Pama, Solera rum, vermouth and bitters. Enjoy the Alcoholiday!
The Hammond by Theo Lieberman

  • 1 oz PAMA Pomegranate Liqueur
  • 1 oz Santa Teresa “1796” Solera Aged Rum
  • 1 oz Atsby Amberthorn Vermouth
  • 2 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters

Combine ingredients in a mixing glass. Add ice and stir. Strain into a rocks glass with ice.

watermelon-popsicles

As July is ending and we creep into August, we’ll be hitting the hottest point of the Summer. If you’re in an area off a lake or ocean it’s not that bad, but it can be almost unbearable here in the center of Florida. I’m always looking for new ways to cool off, and if I can mix in some booze too it’s like hitting the lottery. I saw this recipe for some boozy adult popsicles and I just HAD to make them. I only describe a handful of things as “crack”: 4Rivers Smokehouse BBQ, Harolds Fried Chicken, a frozen irish coffee from Erin Rose Bar , and now these. If you haven’t tried Veev before, consider this your gateway drug into drinking it. It’s an Acai flavored liqueur that previously was 60 proof but was recently reformulated to 70 proof to give it a little more kick and compete with flavored vodkas. We sampled the new and improved Veev at Tales of the Cocktail and it’s a winner. If you’re into the weekend DIY projects, this one takes half the time, and is twice as worth it when you’re done.

Watermelon Mint Acai Popsicles

  • 1/3 cup VEEV
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup fresh mint, torn coarsely
  • 4 cups watermelon, cubed
  • Juice of 2 limes

Blend all ingredients together. Pour into popsicle molds of choice and freeze overnight. If you don’t have popsicle molds use mini dixie cups! Pour liquid into the dixie cups & insert your popsicle stick. Freeze overnight then peel the dixie cups off.
